Wonder Woman - 1940s

I saw these old black and white pictures of Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman in the 70s TV series and started thinking....
What if Wonder Woman with Lynda Carter had been a 1940s serial like Batman, Superman or Adventures of Captain Marvel?
Could we have gotten a Justice Society of America serial?
Would superhero films have been an accepted genre in movies like westerns, comedies, science fiction and dramas?

TV's Batman, Adam West, Passes Away

Television's (and to a whole generation of us) Batman, Adam West passed away Friday night in Los Angeles at the age of 88.
A representative said that he died after a short battle with leukemia.

"Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero." his family said in a statement.

Well said.

Van Williams (The Green Hornet) Passes Away

TV actor Van Williams passed away on November 28, 2016.
Comic book and TV fans know him for his television role as Britt Reid/the Green Hornet where he teamed for one season with the late Bruce Lee as his partner Kato.
He and Bruce Lee made three guest appearances on Batman.
The first was in a "batclimb" cameo, ("The Spell of Tut," 9/28/1966), and later in a two-part episode ("A Piece of the Action," 3/1/1967 and "Batman's Satisfaction," 3/2/1967).

Sara Solomon - Wonder Woman - Joker Connection?

Okay this is kinda weird.....
This is fitness model and fitness trainer Dr, Sara Solomon dressed up as Wonder Woman at a fitness competition.
Sexy Wonder Woman....nice....but then I noticed something.
Wonder Woman is carrying a crowbar.
Why?
Then my mind wandered as it often does.
In the Justice League cartoon, WW and Batman were an item.
And in the comics, Joker "killed" Robin with a crowbar.
Did WW go and take out Joker and took the crowbar as a trophy?
Look at the way she is holding it up over her head in the picture.
The final straw was that picture at the bottom with Wonder Woman running through the streets....and Joker graffiti on the walls.

Maybe I just read too much into things....
Either that or Sara has a vast comic book knowledge and pulled a HUGE inside joke.

Yvonne Craig, TV's Batgirl Passes Away

Yvonne Craig, who millions know and love as the original Batgirl died at her home in Pacific Palisades, California, on August 17th, 2015, after a long battle with breast cancer.
Besides Batgirl, a lot of us remember her as the Orion Marta in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Whom Gods Destroy”.

Another wrestling and comic book connection.
Indy wrestler (and occasional NXT competitor) Leva Bates is a huge comic book fan and she has incorporated DC's "Court of Owls" into her ring persona now.

Barbie as Poison Ivy

Well Barbie can be a superhero or a supervillain.
Here she is as the most famous Eco-terrorist in the world, Poison Ivy.
Though she was originally created to look similar to Bettie Page, Ivy's look changed over the years.
Now she is one of Batman's archenemies and Harley Quinn's "Pal".

Barbie also shows up as the female counterpart of the Dark Knight, Batgirl.
Although she never really rose to the level of Batman, like Supergirl, she has her own very loyal fan base.
Unlike Wonder Woman and Supergirl, Batgirl was created in 1966 and was a collaboration between DC and the Batman television series that was going on at the time.

Jessica De Gouw as the Huntress from Arrow

Jessica De Gouw as the Helena Bertinelli version of the Huntress from the CW's "Arrow".
While not as Gothic as Ashley Scott as The Huntress in "Birds of Prey", this one is a bit closer to the comics.
As you can see she has her crossbow, and there is just a hint of purple on her outfit.

This Huntress is the Helena Bertinelli version of the Huntress.
That is the version that is NOT the daughter of Batman and Catwoman.
Her father is mob boss Frank Bertinelli and Huntress is out to kill him for ordering the death of her fiance.
She shows up in the episodes "Muse of Fire", "Vendetta", "The Huntress Returns" and the episode "Birds of Prey" where she has a run-in with, you guessed it, Black Canary.
This Huntress does wear a costume and carries a crossbow.
Although she is dressed in black, in a nod to her comic book incarnation, her jacket is trimmed/lined in purple.
Unlike other incarnations of Huntress, this one starts out as kind of an anti-hero then pretty much turns full-fledged bad guy.
Bad enough that at the end of “Birds of Prey” she is hauled off to jail.
So that wraps up Huntress.
I will mention though that in addition to her live action appearances, she also appeared in animated form in Justice League Unlimited (which was very well done) and in Batman: The Brave and the Bold (not as well done but fun nonetheless).

Ashley Scott as The Huntress

The Huntress played by the gorgeous Ashley Scott.
This Huntress was the daughter of Catwoman and Batman and was teamed up with Oracle and Black Canary's daughter in the WB's "Birds of Prey".

Forget the plot holes and liberties that they took with the source material. Ashley Scott could have just stood there in that black outfit with her long, leather overcoat billowing behind her for 45 minutes a week and I would have been happy.

Yes forget that she had superhuman strength and agility and her eyes went cat-like when she used her powers, things which had nothing to do with the comics. She just looked really good. Which was the problem with the show. They understood the look, but they lacked the substance. In the hands of other writers this show could have lasted as long as Smallville did easily. But it only lasted one 13 episode season.
 

Justice League: War - DC Universe Animated Original Movies

Yes I finally got around to watching "Justice League: War".
And yes I know it took me long enough.
I liked it.

It wasn't "Under The Red Hood" or "Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox" by any means.
But I hope the Justice League live action movie is at least similar to this.

Huntress - DC Comics

How can you go wrong if you are the incredibly hot daughter of Batman and Catwoman?
Well you can't.
But that wont stop DC from messing around with you and your origin!

Like Hawkgirl, the name "Huntress" has been used in the DC Universe for years and with a lot of different ladies. A lot of people like the Helena Bertinelli version of Huntress, but to me it's a toss-up with the Helena Wayne version. Why? Because she was the daughter of Batman and Catwoman. Of course it was the Batman and Catwoman of Earth-Two, so it actually didn’t count in the "real" DC Universe, but hey....I liked her anyway.

This Huntess was not only killed but also erased from history (kinda harsh DC) in Crisis on Infinite Earths #12. But as DC is want to do, they brought her back, not the character...well yeah the character....kinda... in 1989 as Helena Bertinelli. They used almost the same costume, almost the same name and a different origin.

The Helena Bertinelli Huntress went on to join the Birds of Prey, the Batman Family and was even in the Justice League for a bit. But she had to leave the League after Batman stopped her from killing a supervillain. Yes BATMAN thought she was too unpredictable and violent! I knew I loved her for some reason.

But now...DC...(give me a moment to faceplam, shake my head and roll my eyes) DC with its New 52 has brought back the Earth-2 Batman's daughter, Huntress. Yes....after all that they went back to the first version. Now Huntress is once again Helena Wayne.

I swear I think sometimes they sit around in their meetings and say, "Hey Guys! Wouldn't it be cool if...." and just change everything just for the sake of changing it

Batwoman - DC Comics

A DC character I really wasn't too fond of when I first saw her, but I've gotten quite attached to her.
Now if they would just leave her alone and let her be a character....
(As in the New 52)

No...this is not Batgirl all grown up. Or the late 50s, early 60s incarnation.
This is Kate Kane who rose to pretty quick prominence as the "biggest ticket" lesbian superhero around.

Now there had been other gay superheroes before Kate.
At Marvel, Northstar came out as gay in 1992 and Stormwatch had Apollo and Midnighter.
But this was "Batwoman"...an extended member of the Batman Family.

By the way....to be such a loner....Batman sure has a LOT of friends and allies.
Superman is supposed to be way more outgoing and that dude has like three or four friends.....

Anyway, Batwoman's origin is way too complex and complicated to really go into in detail here.
And with DC switching realities...it changes.
So let's just shoot for she's a female counterpart to Batman and is actually a pretty cool character in her own right.
She even took over for Bats for a while when he went MIA.
And now she has her own sidekick, her cousin Flamebird (Mary Elizabeth Kane).
Not too crazy about that name but hey....what does DC care?

Batman The Brave and The Bold - Part 1

Batman: The Brave and The Bold was a cartoon that aired on the Cartoon Network from November 14th, 2008 until November 18th, 2011.
It was different from the usual Batman portrayal in that this Batman was not dark at all.
No, this wasn't the dark, brooding Batman, this was the science fictiony, fun Batman that was around in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Now a LOT of Dark Knight fans hated this version at first because...well because they were "Dark Knight" fans.
But a lot of them warmed up to the series over time.
Mainly because it was fun.
I mean this was not a cartoon to be taken seriously.
I dont think you would have seen a lot of musical numbers (or an entire musical episode) in Batman: The Animated Series.
Now that's not to say there were never any serious episodes.
They did the the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents, the death of the Ted Kord Blue Beetle, the creation of Deadman, the death of the JSA's Black Canary, the origin of Gentleman Ghost, and B'wana Beast and the Doom Patrol both being killed in the line of duty.
The last two were especially haunting considering this was supposed to be a "kids" cartoon.

Happy 73rd Birthday Batman!

Since the DC Indexes Site says that April 18th, 1939 was the newsstand date for Detective Comics #27, this makes it The Dark Knight's 73rd birthday!

Justice League: Doom

Have you seen the trailer for Justice League: Doom?
If you haven't, here it is....

What make this so amazing is that for this film, they got the band back together!

You have Kevin Conroy as Batman, Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman, Michael Rosenbaum as the The Flash, Carl Lumbly as Martian Manhunter and Superman: The Animated Series' Tim Daly as Superman and instead George Newbern which I'm kinda on the fence about.

Also they wont be having John Stewart's GL, but they will have Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan.

And one thing that makes me VERY happy is that Phil Bourassa (Young Justice) is doing the character designs.
